Rezoning

Most of Riverdale is within the Special Natural Area District (SNAD), a zoning designation that gives extra protection to the natural features in the area.  Click here for Frequently Asked Questions on the Special Natural Area District zoning regulations.

The Department of City Planning is working through some dozen proposals to rezone portions of Community District 8.  For updates, check the Department of City Planning website. On the blue area at the left, click on projects/proposals, then on either rezoning studies or recently-approved rezoning.

Previous Issues
Empire Connection
The Empire Connection is an effort by a private developer, Conjunction LLC, to connect the upstate and downstate power grids via underground cables. In the fall of 2003, the Riverdale Nature Preservancy and other environmental groups challenged Conjunction's plan to erect an 11-story power conversion plant on the Spuyten Duyvil triangle. Currently, the Empire Connection project is proposed as a single cable instead of two, and no facility is proposed for the Spuyten Duyvil triangle.  To visit our archived page on this issue, click here.
